Medifast & Diabetes
~ The glycemic index measures carbohydrate containing foods according how much they raise a patient’s blood sugar. These measurements are important in creating a meal plan and they are also important in determining how much insulin or other blood sugar lowering medications a patient should take during the day and after a meal.
Approximately 26 million Americans have diabetes, a disease that affects your body's ability to produce and use insulin. Insulin is a hormone made in the pancreas, which allows glucose (sugar) from the food eaten to get into the body's cells. Here, the glucose is used for energy. With diabetes, your body either does not make enough insulin or it cannot use the insulin it produces very well, and as a result, glucose builds up in the blood. This is what is known as 'high blood sugar.'
